Louisa Rankin Septet

Motivated to acknowledge the extraordinary community of women in her life that support, celebrate, inspire and empower each other, vocalist Louisa Rankin has assembled some of Australia's best improvising musicians to premiere a suite of music exploring the fortifying impact of significant female relationships in both hers and the wider community.

Bringing an instrumental perspective to collective music-making, Louisa's approach to writing for and singing within an improvising ensemble calls for adventurous musical interaction and inspires a bold approach to improvisation. Often wordless, Louisa's songs provide a vehicle with which to explore the unique qualities of her voice, transcending the written narrative to express deep and visceral emotions with vulnerability, strength and tenderness. An emerging composer on the Australian jazz landscape Louisa's music will excite, challenge and delight listeners as she creates a unique sound-world to express both wistful musings and her deepest thoughts.

Meg Morley (UK)

Deemed an 'Exceptional Talent' by Arts Council England, Melbourne-born London-based pianist Meg Morley creates music for an impressive range of artistic disciplines, including dance (English National Ballet, Matthew Bourne at Sadler's Wells), silent film (British Film Institute, Netherlands Silent Film Festival), and jazz and improvised musics. Her music displays a love of cinematic soundscapes and an ability to convey emotion with graceful virtuosity. In June, Meg released a second album of her original compositions for the Meg Morley Trio – a group which has been praised, in All About Jazz, as being “one of the most exciting on the current UK scene”. Tonight she performs a mixture of new music from the trio albums (in a solo setting) and also revisits her debut piano release from 2018, Through the Hours.

“Morley's style is suffused with jazz and references the Impressionists, revealing new depths on each encounter” - [International Piano Magazine]

“...the intelligence, quality and variety of Morley's writing... incorporates a broad variety of jazz styles ranging from the simple to the complex” - [The Jazz Mann, UK]
