TERI ROIGER celebrates the music of Abbey Lincoln

TERI ROIGER - Jazz Vocalist, Pianist, Lyricist

Teri Roiger has been making music all her life (since age 5) and over the years her music has taken many exciting twists and turns. Teri is a jazz vocalist, but also plays piano, composes music, and writes lyrics. She has been sharing her knowledge and inspiration with her many students for several years at SUNY New Paltz (New Paltz, NY) and around the world. The depth of her experiences and love of jazz is apparent when she brings all of her talents to a live performance, the recording studio, in her compositions, and in her teaching.

Over many years of performing in the US and Internationally, Ms. Roiger has built a fine reputation as a singer, composer, and lyricist of profound musicality and depth of spirit. Her five recordings, GHOST OF YESTERDAY (Shades of Lady Day), DEAR ABBEY (The Music of Abbey Lincoln), STILL LIFE, SHINE A BRIGHT LIGHT, and MISTERIOSO have each met with critical acclaim, as have her live performances at festivals and at top New York jazz spots. Billie Holiday provided the initial spark for Ms. Roiger's commitment to a life in jazz, and her recordings show her uncommon knowledge, appreciation, and deep love for the artistry of Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln, Thelonious Monk, and the great American songbook.

Teri’s five CDs as a leader include some of the most stellar musicians in the jazz scene: Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Burrell, Gil Goldstein, John Menegon, Frank Kimbrough, Roswell Rudd, Steve Gorn, Steve Williams, Matt Wilson, Jay Collins, Pete Levin, among others. Roiger has been teaching in the Jazz Department at SUNY New Paltz for over 20 years: History of Jazz, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, History of Rock, and private Vocal Jazz lessons. She has performed and taught masterclasses at the Panama Jazz Festival, San Miguel Jazz Festival, and Bolzano Jazz Festival.

Peggy Lee’s Open Thread (CAN/AUS)

Peggy Lee – cello

Theo Carbo – guitar

Julien Wilson – saxophones

Dylan van der Schyff – drums

Peggy Lee is an improvising cellist and composer who leads and collaborates across numerous ensembles including her own groups – The Peggy Lee Band, Film In Music, and Echo Painting – and collective projects such as Waxwing and Beatings Are In The Body. Peggy also co-leads the Australian improvising quartet Open Thread (with Julien Wilson, Theo Carbo, and Dylan van der Schyff). Peggy has toured and recorded with many leading artists including Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb, Mary Margaret O’Hara, and Dave Douglas.

In the 1990’s, Canadian cellist, Peggy Lee, and drummer, Dylan van der Schyff, were already being described as “two of the brightest lights on the new music/improv/jazz scene.” Since then, they have garnered countless accolades for their performances and recordings together with many of North America and Europe’s finest improvisers. Classically trained in Toronto, Lee has been heralded as “one of the world’s finest improvising cellists.” She is also a beguilingly original and prolific composer. van der Schyff is a leading avant-garde percussionist, but what really sets him apart is his delicate and conversational approach.

At the start of 2023, Peggy invited established Melbourne saxophonist, Julien Wilson, and prodigious young guitarist, Theo Carbo to form a new ensemble Open Thread . Most of the compositions were written by Peggy specifically for this group, but all the musicians contribute to a collective sound which is fresh and exciting, and hauntingly cinematic, while always maintaining an adventurous and playful edge. Their music integrates anthemic melodies, diverse rhythmic structures, and soundscapes that feed the musical imagination. Open Thread will release their debut album in 2024 on the Earshift label.

"The cellist’s signature sound is an intoxicating blend of avant-garde, modern jazz, chamber, folk, and pop. No one influence ever dominates, and all are commingled so that where one influence ends and the next begins is never certain. It’s all bound together and framed by those heady melodic passages." – Bandcamp Daily
